On Sept. 27 a group of mostly white students at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor held a forum debating whether “Black Lives Matter is harmful to racial relations in the United States” at the Michigan Political Union on campus. The public forum was overtaken by activists who expressed outrage about the topic and recent acts of police violence against black people. Activists repeated phrases like “My life is not up for debate” and “If you are neutral on issues of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor,” among others.
According to an Atlanta Black Star report, the impromptu demonstration is the culmination of racially insensitive activities on the campus, including fliers that warned white women of the dangers of dating black men. The fliers, entitled “Why White Women Shouldn’t Date Black Men,” claimed black men are prone to violence, promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases, among other claims.
University staff removed the fliers and issued this response.
